The EU
I was thinking about the EU on the trip home from Bantry yesterday and how they are out to make us feel better about stuff without actually changeing it at all.....
For example.....
Kilometres...All new sign posts are in Kilometres, so distances appear to be further, but we still have the speed limit in MPH, so though we can go no faster (legally) we appear to cover a greater distance without actually doing so. For example, if you do 50 miles in a hour you think "Hey, the speed limit is 60 MPH - how come it took me an hour, I could have done it in 50 minutes", but if you do the same journey, but it's 80 Kilometres, you think "Whoa! I did 80 Klicks in an Hour - go me"
Another example is the Euro....
Since its introduction back in January it's been like you have so much extra cash. (And you don't - In fact you probably have less because Charlie McCreevy is a stealing bollox) And even though you pay more for stuff (pure number wise - not actual value, though in most cases actual value too) you fell better about it.
Let's say you go out and buy something that costs 99 euro. You buy it and you think "Hey, this rocks - and I got it for under a hundred", but if you had bought the same thing a year earlier for 78 quid, you'd be thinking "Yeah - it's cool and I need one, but it cost the best part of a hndred quid.
So, basically what I am saying is Damn you foul EU - I'm on to your game and I'm waiting for you to slip up
